Four procedures for enumerating channel sac fry were evaluated: a) wet weight; b) wet volume; c) dry weight; and d) dry volume using a balance and volumetric cylinder of equal precision. The relative precision and accuracy of each technique was determined for various samples of one-day-old sac fry. The number of samples and the size of samples needed for an efficient but accurate enumeration was studied. The maternal effect, and fry age on the number sac fry per unit weight or volume was evaluated. Dry weight or volume estimates were more variable than wet estimates. Six samples of 50 fry each using a wet weight or volume estimate had a 95% accuracy. The smaller the sample size the fewer number of fry estimated per unit. Both sac fry age and individual differences between females had a significant effect on the number of sac fry per unit. A wet weight enumeration of sac fry allows the same degree of precision when enumerating large or small quantities of fry. A wet volumetric enumeration requires a less precise tool when enumerating large quantities. The effect of confinement before channel catfish fry release into earthen nursery ponds was evaluated. One-day-old catfish sac fry were stocked directly into 0.04-ha earthen ponds at density of 165,000/ ha or held in the hatchery and fed for 3 or 7 days before release, o r geld in a net cage in the pond for 7 days before release. Highest survivals were attained when one-day-old swim-up fry were transferred directly to earthen ponds (81.8%) or reared three days in troughs (84.7%), compared to fry held for seven days in troughs (66.3%) or seven days inside net cages (65.9%). No significant differences were found among treatments in mean final weight (range from 2.25 to 2.50 g), or mean final length (range from 6.62 to 6.83 cm). Yields ranged between 236.89 and 343.87 kg/ha and were significantly correlated to survival. |
