This study aims to analyze the dynamics of changes in the land use by evaluating the spatial and temporal changes of land use and occupation in the Ribeir??o Gustavo watershed, municipality of Massaranduba, SC, resulting from human activities occurred in the years 1957, 1978 and 2008. With the aid of the Geographic Information System-GIS GIS ArcGIS ?? version 9.3, aerial photographs and a Quickbird sensor image, land use data were obtained from the three periods, resulting in land use maps, matrix of change percentage and state vector for the three periods to check the temporal variation in the areas. Based on the analysis method, it was possible to identify ten classes over the 51 years of soil use and occupation in the watershed, namely: forest in early stage of regeneration; forest in intermediate stage of regeneration, forest in advanced stage of regeneration, agroforestry systems, reforestation, banana, pasture, irrigated rice crop, annual crops and subsistence farming. The results showed that there were changes in land use and occupation in the comparison between years of 1957, 1978 and 2008, with a predominance of areas with secondary forest and increased area occupied by irrigated rice in lowlands.
