The experiment occured between April and September 1998, with monthly measurements of shell lenght. Mussels from collectors grew faster than mussels from natural stocks (p<0,05). Mussels from collectors reached shell lenght of 71,1 mm in five months of cultivation, with a mean initial lenght of 31,8 mm ± 1,2. At the fifth month 57% of the population from collectors reached the comercial size (7 cm). Observed growth was comparable to the data published. Water temperature and salinity ranged within the optimum of the species. The use of collectors is recommended in order to avoid unsustainable exploitation of the natural stocks. aCrescimento aMaricultura aMexilhao aPerna perna aSemente1 aFERREIRA, J.F. tIn: SIMPOSIO BRASILEIRO DE AQUICULTURA, 11.
