One of the main production systems of freh water fish uses pig manure as input to the pond. This has bring to a lot of discussion on environmental issues about this systems. This paper deals on the environmental assesment of three tilapia production systems: i) tilapia monoculture; ii) tilapia polyculture fed with formula feed; and iii) tilapia polyulture using swine manure. Water quality on the experimental ponds during culture period (180 days) was compared with brazilian environmental regulations. Critical values were founf for DO, phosfate, amonia and BOD5. Nevertheless, all the three systems improved water quality when compared with incoming water. Using the Critical Volume Method, we found that phosfate is by far the most importat poluent of all the three systems studied. When crtitical volumes were correlated with total biomass produced by the systmes, the swine-fish system showed an better cost-benefit eficiency than formula feed systems. Finally, we found that orgnic matter acumulation on on sediments was higher in tilapia monoculture. aImpacto ambiental aPiscicultura aPolicultivo aTilapia1 aLARGURA, J.1 aPEREIRA, C.M. tIn: SIMPOSIO BRASILEIRO DE AQUICULTURA, 11.
