C. aResponse of 'Daiane' apples to storage atmospheres and chemical inhibition of ethylene.h[electronic resource] c2021 aThe apple cultivar ?Daiane?, a cross between ?Gala? and ?Princesa?, is commercially cultivated in Southern Brazil. Interactive effects of the storage atmosphere and inhibition of ethylene by 1-methylcyclopropen (1-MCP) on storability of ?Daiane? apples from two orchards were assessed in this study. For experiment one, fruit exposed or not exposed to 1-MCP were stored in regular air (RA) or in controlled atmosphere (CA) with 1.5 kPa O2 and 1.5 kPa CO2 and fruit quality was assessed every two months over eight months storage. For experiment two, fruit were stored in RA, or in CA with 1.5 kPa O2 and four partial pressures of CO2 (<0.5, 1.5, 3.0 or 4.5 kPa) for six months. The storage temperature was 0.8??C in both experiments and after storage fruit were held for a 7d shelf-life at 22??C. CA storage reduced respiration and ethylene production, improved retention of firmness and acidity and reduced fungal decay and flesh browning. There was an additive effect of 1-MCP and CA to delay fruit softening while CA and 1-MCP had the equivalent effect on prevention of fungal decay and flesh browning. Fruit of both orchards softened from 74 N to less than 53 N in two months from harvest when not treated with 1-MCP and stored in RA, and retained firmness above 62 N after 8 months CA storage when treated with 1-MCP. Results suggest that ?Daiane? has a storage potential of approximately 2 and 6 to 8 months when stored in RA and CA, respectively, and 4 and > 8 months when treated with 1-MCP and stored in RA and CA, respectively. The ?Daiane? apples did not develop any symptoms of CO2 injury in response to increasing partial pressures of CO2 from <0.5 to 4.5 kPa, regardless of 1-MCP treatment. Higher partial pressures of CO2 reduced fruit softening, respiration and ethylene production in fruit not treated with 1-MCP. Hence, a CA storage protocol with high CO2 may be applied to ?Daiane? apples to maintain quality and to reduce the amount of CO2 scrubbing.
