In the last years, significant population outbreaks is worrying local producers in relation to the continuous supply of forage due to the significant damage caused by this pest species complex. The use of mycoinsecticides is a promising alternative for management of spittlebugs; however, the search for new isolates or fungi species more effective under field conditions is a gap to be filled yet. In light of this, systematic surveys were conducted in order to assess the natural incidence of fungi species on populations of spittlebugs in pastures established in different municipalities of Santa Catarina State, Brazil, in order to establish, through these surveys, a collection of isolates to support future studies and applied biological control programs. For that purpose, specimens adults (n = 1,564) were collected in pastures (Cynodon dactylon cv. Tifton 85) without any application of mycoinsecticides from 12 municipalities (Alto da Bela Vista, Arvoredo, Bom Retiro, Brunópolis, Canoinhas, Campo Erê, Iomerê, Lindóia do Sul, Ouro Verde, Palmitos, Santa Rosa do Sul, and São Miguel do Oeste) using a sweeping net device. In the laboratory conditions, the natural mortality of spittlebugs was observed during 10 days, being the obtained cadavers disinfected and kept on Elisa plates in order to assess the incidence of fungi species and subsequent isolation of them. Based on obtained samples, it was found 15 fungi species (Alternaria sp., Aspergillus sp., A. niger, Bipolaris sp., Cladosporium sp., Curvularia sp., Metarhizium sp., Mucor sp., Nigrospora sp., Penicillium sp., Pestalotia sp., Pithomiices sp., Monilia sp.) in association with spittlebugs, being mostly of them recognized as opportunistic pathogens or plant endophytes. The natural incidence of entomophatogenic fungi Metarhizium sp.
