Objective: To evaluate the effect of aqueous extract of Hc flowers in rats induced to genotoxicity. Material and Methods: Were studied 18 rats that were divided into three groups: control (C); Genotoxicity (G) and genotoxicity treated with Hc (GH). The aqueous extract of flowers of Hc (500 mg / kg body weight) diluted in 1 mL of water was administered by gavage. The genotoxicity was induced on the 8th day of study, by the intraperitoneal administration of methyl methane sulfonate. During the 9 days of the study were checked body weight, food intake, water intake, urinary and fecal excretion. The animals were sacrificed 24 hours after the induction of genotoxicity and blood used to perform biochemical studies. The organs were removed, weighed and compared between groups. The femur was collected to evaluate the genotoxic or antigenotoxic effect of Hc flowers by micronucleus test in bone marrow cells. Results and Discussion: The administration of genotoxic agent resulted in reduced food intake (p = 0.0018) and greater weight loss (p = 0.0028) of the animals in Group G, but those treated with Hc (GH Group) not changed their dietary intake and body weight when compared to Group C. The animals of the experimental groups were not statistically different for the water intake variables, fecal excretion, glucose profile, liver, kidney and serum total cholesterol. However, the Group G showed a statistical trend (p = 0.0633) for higher urinary excretion compared to GH and C. The Group G had lower serum triglycerides, increased LDL-C and HDL-C compared to group C. Groups G and GH exhibited lower average weight of the spleen (p = 0.0001) compared to group C. The induction of genotoxicity untreated (group G) led to greater numbers of micronucleus compared to control group (p = 0.0313), and the GH Group did not differ statistically from Group C. Conclusion: The aqueous extract of Hc flowers has a protective effect in mice induced genotoxicity. agenotoxicity aHibiscus cannabinus1 aCOMBY, J.1 aFREY, P.1 aLE??O, M.1 aFRANCA,1 aBERTOLDI, F.
