B. aANTIOXIDANT CAPACITY AND PROTECTION OF PITAYA SEEDS AGAINST MICROSOME LIPID PEROXIDATION.h[electronic resource] c2016 aThe literature points out the involvement of oxidative stress in several diseases. The objective was to evaluate the antioxidant capacity of Hylocereus undatus, Hylocereus costaricensis and Selenicereus megalanthus seeds in protecting biological membranes from oxidative stress. We determined the antioxidant capacity of H. undatus, H. costaricensis and S. megalanthus seeds applying total radical antioxidant parameter (TRAP) by chemiluminescence (QL)using Trolox. Rat liver microsomes were oxidized with iron/ascorbic acid system and compared to non-oxidized microsomes and evaluated by tert-butyl induced lipoperoxidation. Next, microsomes were incubated with pitaya seeds prior oxidation. Lipoperoxidation were evaluated by QL and results were expressed as area under the curve (AUC). Our data revealed increased TRAP for pitaya seeds as compared to Trolox, independently of the specie. Oxidized system increased microsome lipoperoxidation as compared to control group. We show for the first time that seeds from H. undatus, H. costaricensis and S. megalanthus protected biological membranes from lipid peroxidation as compared to oxidized microsomes. aDragon Fruit aHylocereus aOxidative stress aSelenicereus1 aVICTORINO, V.
