E. aRecording system to evaluate ingestive behavior and geographical location of domestic herbivores.h[electronic resource] c2016 aThe knowledge on the behavioral and ingestive patterns of grazing animals is important, because it is useful to establish management targets in grazing environments. However, there is need for tools that enable an accurate, continuous and easy animal monitoring. The objective was to develop a recording system to monitor and analyze parameters of ingestive behavior concomitantly with geographic location of grazing animals. For this purpose, we used a bioacoustic technique with intention of discriminate behavioral activities of domestic herbivores. The system consist of a digital recorder (Roland??, R-05), lavalier microphone (Leson??, ML- 70D), GPS receiver (Holux??, RCV-3000) and power bank with 11.000 mAh (El Shaddai Technology). Adaptation and fields evaluations were performed in the experimental farms of FEPAGRO (S??o Gabriel, RS, Brazil) and EPAGRI (Lages, SC, Brazil). The system allowed to discriminate and monitor, continuously for up to 48 h, when and where the animals perform their activities, such as grazing and rumination. There are limitations of compatible memory cards with the digital recorder for registers more than 50 h in high-resolution mode (WAV 16-bit/44.1 kHz), however recordings in MP3 format allow 540 h on 32 GB SDHC card. The acoustic records can be analyzed using Audacity??, which is a free software. Grazing, rumination and idleness can be easily discriminated because these activities has markedly distinct acoustic characteristics. In addition, in this software is possibly to parametrize the acoustic target characteristics for the automatic identification of the mandibular movements (bites and chews). However, we still need more studies to define the parameters and automatic identification due to the variations in grazing conditions and animals. The synchronization of digital recorder and GPS logger allow to spatialize the variables of ingestive behavior. The system evolution can provides important potential for the estimation of bite mass, allowing the use of bioacoustic technique in domestic herbivores a tool to estimate animal forage intake in grazing condition. abioacoustic aforage intake agrazing arumination1 aBALDISSERA, T.
