M. aPLANNING AND MANAGEMENT FOR SUSTAINABLE COASTAL AQUACULTURE DEVELOPMENT IN SANTA CATARINA STATE, SOUTH BRAZIL.h[electronic resource] c2016 aThe participatory approach used in PLDM to zone aquaculture parks has proven to be efficient, strengthening the organizations of shellfish farmers, involving research and extension agencies in the process, and generating effective outcomes in terms of the demarcation of aquaculture areas. The PLDM promotes evolution in coastal aquaculture planning and management, and it integrates the sector into coastal areas. It provides a tool for controlling the environment at the level of the individual farm, as well as resolving competing interests and conflicts in relation to protection, use and exploitation of coastal resources. The transparent process of the PLDM has indeed provided good communication channels with all stakeholders and contributed to minimising criticism from environmentalists about the sustainability of bivalve mollusc culture. The PLDM has also promoted participatory management and created better conditions for law enforcement and the control of shellfish farming areas. acoastal aquaculture ageographic information systems amanagement aplanning ashellfish1 aVIANNA, L.
