However, success of an IPM plan extremely depends on identification of pest species, which allows distinguishing whether or not the insect species are dangerous to agricultural crops. Crops of banana, subgroup Prata, located in the Project Ja??ba near to the S??o Francisco River (northern of Minas Gerais State) (Koppen Climatic Classification AW), presented large defoliation by a phytophagous insect in the last years. Banana growers attributed the attack to a grasshopper species. The objective this study was to identify the insect and confirm in laboratory the pest status for future IPM programs. Grasshopers were collected in different banana crops located in the S??o Francisco River and Rio das Velhas River in Minas Gerais State. Specimens were reared in laboratory feeding on banana leaves and fruits aiming to reproduce the defoliation and damages registered in the field. Insect specimens were prepared for identification and preserved in the Banana Pest Collection of the Itaja?? Experimental Station ? EPAGRI. The species was identified as Tropidacris collaris (Stoll, 1813) (Orthoptera, Romaleidae), a grasshopper usually reported exceeding 100mm in length. In laboratory, the adults collected in the banana crops fed on banana leaves completing the reproductive cycle and laying eggs, which denotes the potential threaten for banana crops. On the other hand, no damage was registered in fruits, denoting a clear preference for leaves. Therefore, T. collaris arises as a potential pest for banana crops in Brazil, demanding studies in field for management and control. aGrasshopper aIPM ataxonomy1 aNEGREIROS, R. J. Z.1 aRODRIGUES, M.
