The Municipality has 117,000 inhabitants, from these only 1,070 families live in the rural area. There is an increasing trend toward rural exodus, due to the attractiveness of urban activities and mainly because rural tasks are hard and risky and in Brazil there is not a well defined agricultural policy. The municipality of Itajaí has an area of 304 square quilometers.
