A. aInduction of resistance in tomato against Meloidogyne javanicaby Pochonia chlamydosporia.h[electronic resource] c2015 aThis study investigates the possible effects of Pochonia chlamydosporia(Pc) on the induction of local resistance in tomato roots infected by Meloidogyne javanica(Mj). The treatments included spraying plants with Acibenzolar-S-Methyl (ASM), methyl jasmonate (MeJa) or ethephon (Et), alone or in combination with Pc. At the 27th day after sowing, a total of 5,000 chlamydospores/g of soil were added to the soil of each pot for the Pc treatments. At 72 h after the soil infestation with Pc, plants were sprayed with ASM (1.0 mM), MeJa (0.5 mM) or Et (0.5 mM). Then, the plants were inoculated with a total of 200 second-stage juveniles (J2) of Mj/plant at 48 hours after being sprayed by the resistance inducers. The roots of plants from each treatment were collected at 24, 96, and 168 h after the soil infestation with Pc to determine the activities of the phenylalanine ammonia-lyases (PAL), peroxidases (POX), and polyphenoloxidases (PPO). The number of galls (NG) per root system was evaluated at 30 days after the Pc inoculation. The plants exposed to Pc alone showed the lowest NG, whereas the NG of plants sprayed with ASM, MeJa or Et did not decrease. The combined application of Pc and resistance inducers decreased the capacity of Pc to trigger local induced resistance. In conclusion, Pc was able to trigger the resistance of tomato against M. javanica infection mainly mediated by the action of polyphenoloxidases and peroxidases activities. In contrast, PAL was detrimental for the colonization of the fungus and the induction of resistance. abiological control aplant defense aroot-knot nematode asoil-borne pathogen1 aRESENDE, R.
