L. aMetamitron as a substitute of carbaryl on post blooming apple thinning.h[electronic resource] c2013 aFor apple chemical thinning in post-flowering was used in Brazil the Carbaryl or mixture of Carbaryl with NAA or BA, applied one or more times according to the production capacity and intensity fruiting occurred. With the cancellation of the registration, it was necessary to evaluate new alternatives for replace Carbaryl. We tested the active ingredient metamitron at two concentrations, alone or in tank mix with BA in 3 apple?s cultivar: 'Maxigala', 'Supreme Fuji' and 'Fred Hough'. Application of 384 ppm and 768 ppm of metamitron in a mixture with BA, ranging from 40 mg.L-1 to 80 mg.L-1 ha applied when the fruits were 5 to 25 mm in diameter was compared with the standard treatment and hand thinning. We used a randomized complete block design with 4-6 repetitions of a plant. The variables analyzed were: fruit set (%); percentage of floral clusters with 1, 2, 3, 4 or more; fruit yield per plant (kg); average fruit fresh mass (g) and percentage of fruit dropped after thinning. The metamitron alone or in combination with BA reduced production per plant and significantly increased the fresh weight of the fruits in all cultivars. Metamitron at a concentration of 800 ppm, especially in 'Maxigala' promoted an excessive fruit thinning. Metamitron or metamitron + BA, has potential to compose the program of chemical thinning of apple trees to replace Carbaryl. aMA???? aMalus domestica1 aLEITE, G. B.1 aCOUTO, M.1 aGABARDO, G.
