Information about these episodes was obtained from specialized websites, related news published in local media as well as through information generated by Epagri/Ciram. In total, 18 storm surges events were identified in the period, seven in 2009, and 11 in 2010. Most storm surges were associated with the combined effects of cold fronts, tropical cyclones and spring tides. The total number of drowning deaths in the period was 53, from which 24 occurred in 2009 and 29 in 2010. Males represented 82% of the total toll. Santa Catarina registered 62% of the drowning death toll. In this state there were five males in every six recorded drowning events. During the study period, 26 boat accidents were reported, divided in 11 sinking?s, 6 capsized, 6 were drifting and 3 boats were stranded. 73% of the registered accidents involving ships occurred in Santa Catarina state. Cold weather fronts were present in 65% of the total number of boat accidents, as well as in 73% of the boat sinking?s, in 33% of the capsized and stranded accidents and in 100% of the drifts.
