This fungus may cause the death of the entire plant, and because it is a soilborne pathogen able to persist in the absence of plants, infested soils cannot be replanted with susceptible cultivars for many years, which hinders the development of the banana industry in these areas. In the present study, the pathogenicity and aggressiveness of 175 Foc isolates collected from banana plants in the South of Brazil were tested. In addition, the morphology of the colonies was evaluated in vitro. The morphological characteristics observed confirmed the isolates to belong to Foc. All isolates were pathogenic to banana plants, but there was significant variation in the aggressiveness, with a tendency for the isolates from the South to be more aggressive, which may be a result of the lower temperatures in the region. aBanana aPanama disease1 aSILVA, C.
