Although several pineapple micropropagation ProtocoIs have aIready been published, signifieant improvement eouId be achieved if the stages of the in vitro eulture were better defined. Our work coneemed several experiments aiming at the mass produetion of high quality plantlets. MateriaIs and metbods. Axillary buds were inoculated on an MS l??qu??d eulture medium added With NAA (2/lM) and BAP (4 /lM). Regenerated shoots, divided into three classes of different s??zas, were then used In further experiments. First, these shoots were inocuIated in flasks eontaining the same MS cultura medium With or Without growth regulators. Then, four bas??c media, eontaining different salts and free from growrh reguIators were tested. In a third assay, the MS eulture medium was eompared w??th a half-diluted MS culture medium for studying theplantlet elongation and root??ng stage. Results. In the MS euIture medium supplemented With NAA and BAP, the highest muItiplication rate (13.5 shoots) was obtained w??th the smallest shoots inocuIated, wh??le in the MS eulture medium free Df growth regulators, the highest plantlets (7.7 em) were the result of the highest shoots inoculated and showed no vitrification. The normal MS cuIture medium, in eomparison With the half-diluted one and the three other saIt fonnuIations, revealed a signifleant increase in the plantlet elongation and best general features. For accIimatization, the highest values of the survival rate (93.8%) and fresh and dry weights were obtained With the transferenee of higher than 7.0 em in vitro plantlets. Conclusion. Using the Protocol deseribed in this work, it is poss??bls to obta??n 1 million in vitro plantlets after 9 months from a s??ngls bud, With a 45 day subculture interval and an average multiplieation rate of 10 shoots per bud. aAnanas comosus aBrazil aCulture media aIn vitro experimentation aPlant propagation1 aPINTO,1 aZAFFARI, G.
