Several areas currently approved for mollusc culture in the State are shallow embayments well suited for oyster and mussel culture, but in some of these areas the feasibility for scallop culture is still unclear. Increasing interest of growers makes it important to evaluate the environmental suitability for scallop culture in areas where other molluscs are currently produced. This study compared growth and survival of Nodipecten nodosus cultured in 4 sites near Florian??polis (SC): Praia do Forte and Sambaqui in North Bay;Ribeir??o and Caieira in South Bay, during two experimental culture cycles. Commercial size scallops can be attained within 1 year at North and South Bays aquaculture sites, which is a short period compared to some other commercially cultured species. However, the high mortalities recorded bring limited potential for scallop culture within these bays. The recent (2012) official approval of new aquaculture leases in areas outside embayments in Santa Catarina State opens up the availability of more suitable areas for scallop culture and brings greater potential for its development in the State. aMaricultura aNodipecten nodosus aVieira1 aZANETTE, G.
