Coastal platforms and piers serve as versatile alternatives to complement the ocean observation network. They have low operating costs, provide easy access for maintenance, supply power for instruments and provide protection against vandalism. The Scripps Pier in the United States, for example, has been studying interdisciplinary meteorological and oceanographic processes for over 100 years (Checkley and Lindergren, 2014). Southern Brazil is well know for many recreational fishing piers along the coast. These platforms represent an affordable option for long-term monitoring of the ocean and atmosphere, particularly in the context of climate change, energy assessments and environmental monitoring. A small laboratory named "Ocean and Atmosphere Observation Base" (Base de Observação do Oceano e Atmosfera, BOOA), was built in 2016 on Entremares Fishing Platform of Balneário Arroio do Silva, SC. The 9 m2 lab provides physical support, lightning protection and power supply for a LIDAR wind profiler and a meteorological tower. BOOA is also equipped with autonomous ocean temperature loggers and have potential for installing different types of autonomous ocean and atmospheric sensors. BOOA has been serving as a platform for research and outreach. So far the pier has collected one year of temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, sea surface temperature and winds measured between 20 and 210 m height. BOOA is currently part of an agreement between UFSC, EPAGRI and IFSC for its long-term maintenance. The meteorological tower data will be soon be available in real time MenosCoastal platforms and piers serve as versatile alternatives to complement the ocean observation network.
