The objective of this study was to characterize the viticultural performance of Italian indigenous varieties in high altitude regions of Santa Catarina State. The experiment was conducted at São Joaquim Experimental Station ? EPAGRI vineyards (28°16'30,08?S, 49°56'09,34?W, altitude 1,400m) and the evaluations occurred in 2011, 2012 and 2013 vintages. The varieties evaluated were Prosecco, Verdicchio, Vermentino, Aglianico, Ancellotta, Aleatico, Lambrusco, Negroamaro, Rebo Montepulciano, Sagrantino and Sangiovese. Phenological stages and thermal requirement were determined during the vegetative cycle. At harvest were evaluated cluster number, yield, cluster weight, pH and total soluble solids, acidity. Varieties better adapted to areas of high altitude (1,400 m), have intermediate cycle, lasting from September 15 until late April. Vermentino and Verdicchio have great potential for production of white wines, due to high grape quality and high yields. Rebo and Sangiovese produced high quality grapes, but eventually may have problems with damage caused by late frosts, while Sagrantino and Montepulciano also produced quality grapes, but eventually are subject to incomplete maturation, due to its late cycle. The other varieties do not adapt to high altitudes of southern Brazil, due to early budbreak (Prosecco and Aleatico) or very late ripening (Aglianico, Negroamaro and Lambrusco). |
