The effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) isolates on plant growth and nutrition
varies according to fungal species and isolates. This aspect must be elucidated to select
and use these fungi in a microbial inoculant. The aim of this work was to evaluate the
intra and interspecific variability of AMF isolates on promoting plant growth of Vitis
vinifera and to measure their activities. Vitis seedlings were grown in a sterilized
soil:sand mixture and inoculated with isolates of Acaulospora colombiana (MTG360A,
AMZ570A, MGR606A), A. morrowiae (SCT048B, SCT500B, PRN108B), Gigaspora
decipiens (PRN108A, PRN107B, SCT826A, SCT114A), and Claroideoglomus etunicatum
(SCT080A, SCT101A, SCT078A), obtained from the International Culture Collection of
Glomeromycota (CICG). After 6 months, the following plant and fungal parameters were
measured: shoot biomass (SB) and P content, spore numbers, extraradicular hyphal
length, and mycorrhizal colonization by vesicles, arbuscules, and total colonization. AMF
isolates influenced SB. Differences among isolates were observed for total and hyphal
colonization, while differences on colonization by arbuscules were detected among
species. Isolates of C. etunicatum showed high intraspecific variability and affected the
largest number of parameters compared to other species. The number of spores was
the parameter with the highest variation among species, with differences of 1720%
between isolates with the largest and lowest spore numbers. Variation among isolates
of G. decipiens and C. etunicatum was up to 180% on their effect on SB. Colonization by
arbuscules explained interspecific variability only for A. morrowiae isolates. We
concluded that selection of isolates for an inoculant must consider the variability of AMF
occurring at the isolates and species levels, as both influence plant growth and nutrition. MenosThe effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) isolates on plant growth and nutrition
