The vineyards located in high altitude regions of Santa Catarina State present the need for hedging to control excessive vegetative growth. The aim of this study was to compare the realization of manual and mechanical hedging in economic and functional way. The experiment was conducted at EPAGRI Experimental Station, located in the city of São Joaquim, Santa Catarina State (28°17'39? S; 49°55'56? W, altitude 1,415 m a.s.l.), during season 2016. The vineyard was planted in 2006, the plants were grafted on Paulsen 1103, vines were trained in vertical shooting positioning trellis and spacing 3.0 x 1.5 m. The treatments consisted of manual hedging performed with scissors, manual hedging done with scissors on a platform and mechanical hedging performed on a platform. The economic and functional study consisted of determining the time (hours and days) and cost ($) to perform the mechanical and manual hedging in one hectare vineyard. The results were submitted to analysis of variance and Tukey test (5% probability). There are required 13 hours to perform mechanical hedging on a platform in one hectare vineyard, while to perform manual hedging with the scissors are required 144 hours of work, and 36 hours with scissors on a platform. This represents a reduction of 1,101% in the cost of hand labor to perform mechanical hedging compared to manual hedging with scissors, and a reduction 274% compared to the hedging done with the scissors on a platform. The cost of the pruner is compensated for its efficiency in time to do the work. The use of the platform reduced 402% of the time to perform the hedging with scissors in one hectare of vineyard. Therefore it is evident the importance of mechanization to reduce costs and to optimize hand labor.
