The State of Santa Catarina is the third larger producer of banana in Brazil, with proximally six thousand farmers working on this activity. Thrips are among the main pests related to the banana crop. The damages caused by their phytophagy considerably depreciate the commercial value of the fruit. This research was performed to identifying the thrips species associated to banana crop in eight cities of Santa Catarina state (Corupá, Garuva, Guaramirim, Itajaí, Luis Alves, Rio dos Cedros, Schroeder and Tijucas). Casual samplings were collected in bunches that showed typical symptoms of rust caused by thrips between August 2007 and September 2010 in banana orchards of the cited cities. The selected bunches were analyzed to the Entomology Laboratory of Epagri/Itajaí Experimental Station, where the insects collected were screened using brushes with fine bristles and a stereomicroscope (40X). Next, the insects were stored in eppendorfs tubes filled with alcohol 70% and sent to the Esalq/USP´s Department of Entomology and Acarology. There the collected material was screened, prepared in permanent microscope slides, identified and deposited in the Entomology Museum. The identified species were Frankliniella brevicaulis Hood, 1937 and Bradinothrips musae (Hood, 1956). The first of them was in Corupá, Guaruva, Guaramirim, Itajaí, Luis Alves and Schroeder. B. musae was identified in samples from Tijucas and Rio dos Cedros. This is the first record of B. musae in banana for Santa Catarina state, Brazil.
