The creation and development of rural settlements by the National Program of Land Reform (PRNA) should be based on the needs of the land tenure to keep the small farmers in their lands and on the land use, leading to the practice of the rural integrated development. The analysis of the physical-environmental features represents an important instrument to the land use planning and occupation according to rural land use and environmental suitability. Therefore, this work proposed the analysis of the land use conflicts based on the evaluation of the land use suitability by means of the
cartographic method, using GIS tools, through the generation and overlaying of different thematic maps. The application of the cartographic method, in an automated way using GIS, allowed data production, implementation of spatial analysis, and interpretation and presentation of results with significant reduction of time and subjectivity. The use of this methodology provided two threshold responses to the planning of the natural resources use in rural settlements: the land use suitability classes; regularities and irregularities in the land use for each area.
