The experiment was initiated in August of 1991 at the Sao Joaquim Experimental Station, using an experimental desing of completed randomizedblockswith six treatments, four apple trees per plot and four replicates. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the length of the M.9 interstock and the height of the Marubakaido rootstock over the vigor and productivity of Fuji apples and observe the behavior of three planting densities of Royal Galla and Fuji cultivars using M.9 and M.26 rootstocks. The following treatments were used: Fuji / M.9 (10 cm) / Marubakaido; Fuji / M.9 (15 cm) / Marubakaido; Fuji / M.9 (20 cm) / Marubakaido; Fuji / Marubakaido (20 cm); Fuji / Marubakaido (60 cm) and Fuji / MM.106 (20 cm). It was used in the planting density experiment, sub-divided plots and four completely randomized bloks. The plots were arranged by the cultivar factor in two levels: Royal Gala and Fuji cultivars. In the sub-plots, the factorial 3x2 was used, with tactors: rootstocks (two levels: M.9 and M.26) and space between plants (three levels: o,5; 1,0; and 1,5 m). The evaluations were: vigor of the plants, diameter of the rootstock, interstock and cultivar. Other evaluations were done as the plant height and width in order to determine the productivity capacity; production (t/ha) and the fruit weigth avarage. The results indicatied that interstock M.9 over Marubakaido is recommened for both Gala and Fyji cultivars, using a minimum length of 20 cm of interstock and five meters space betwen rows and two meters betwen plants. The highest planting density was correlated the highest productivity per hectare. The M.26 the most vigours rootstocks in the trial, presented highest productive.
