Settlement of oyster larvae is an important aspect for artesanal oyster farm implantation. Four sites were chosen along the estuarine area of Barra dos Carvalhos (13 0 39´05" S; 38 0 57´59" W), Brazil. Spat fall for oyster C. rhizophorae and their competitors, barnacles (Balanus spp e euraphia rhizophorae) was monthly monitored from settlement data collected from oyster shells, used as cultch. Biweekly, environmental parameters such as temperature (T 0 C), salinity (S%o), pH, dissolved oxigen, turbidity, chlorophyl and pheopigments have been determined at all the sampling stations. Direct relationships between variations of these parameters and settlement data could not be shown, except for salinity and turbidity in the period of April to June. A settlement peak was noticed from April to June when the salinity was having intermediate values (14 top 28%o); low settlement was noticed all along the other periods of the year. The peak previously
noticed in other tropical populations of oysters, which occurs generally around october, did not happen, problably due to the low salinities (8 to 13%o), verified in the area at this time. A heavy settlement (26 spats/cm 2 ) was noticed only at Rio Amaro, one of the 4 studied stations. The availabity of seeds found there, is enough for the implantation of artesanal oyster culture in the region.
