Salt preserved fish (white croaker) and crustaceans (blue crab and pink shrimp head) were tested as as a low cost alternative feed for pink shrimp Farfantepenaeus paulensis reared in cages at Patos Lagoon estuary and their performance compared to controls (commercial diet and fresh fish and crustaceans), summing up 6 dietary treatments. Eighteen cages were set up and 120 juveniles (mean wet weight 0,25g) stocked at a density of 30/m 2 . Animals were fed once at evening and their food comsumption
monitored every two days for adjusting daily meal. Wet weight biometries of 30 shimps per cage took place every 7 days until the 28 th day, when survivors were counted. Water temperature and salinity was monitored throughout the experiment and had no deleterious effect on cultured animals. Data among treatments in terms of survival, growth and final biomass were submited to one-way ANOVA and in some cases to Tukey test. Except for the Salted Fish treatment, which resulted in inferior cultured biomass, all other tested treatments were statistically comparable to controls. Salted crustaceans exhibited extraordinary apparent food conversion rates. Results prove that salted fisheries wastes are a real alternative as feed for cage reared F. paulensis.
