Ceará has a semi-arid climate with low seasonal rainfall. Then the limited freshwater resources of the Ceará point to the use of brackish water for prawn culture. Relatively little research has been conducted on culture of Macrobrachium jelskii in brackish water. This experiment was carried out at the Technology Center of Aquaculture (CTA), Federal University of Ceará (UFC). The objective of this study was to compare the total lenght, weight and survival rate of juvenile prawn M. jelskii cultured in differents salinities. The laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the adaptability of M. jelskii to various salt concentration. The prawns were cultured in four differents salinities (0, 2, 4 and 6?) in 3.5 l of capacity per aquarium. In the experiment, 12 aquariums, on a stocking density of 5 prawns/aquarium were used. The averages of the temperature and pH were
26.3ºC and 7.82, respectively. The average of total length, weight and survival rate in the treatment 0, 2, 4 and 6? were 0.194g, 3.12cm and 80?; 0.216g, 3.12cm and 46.6?; 0.178g, 3.01cm and 66.6?; 0.204g, 2.91cm and 53.3?, respectively. The results did not show any significante difference for all the salinities tested for average weight and length. We concluded that it is possible to culture fresh water prawn M. jelskii on salinities, 0, 2, 4 and 6?.
