The tarpon, Tarpon atlanticus, occurs in abundance in the Northeast coast of Brazil. Tarpon is a good candidate for aquaculture. Its potential to mariculture was investigated in this work. Initially, a culture was carried out in 3 cages (4.0 x 5.0 x 1.0 m). Each cage held 100 wild young individuals weighing 83.83 16.30 g. Nile tilapia was given to feed them. After 122 days, the mean weight gain was 406.63 106.03 g. Subsequently, 50 tarpons, of a 302-day culture weighing 2,243 434 g, showed a yield of 86.70% after being eviscerated. The values concerning the chemical analysis of cultured tarpons were similar to those observed for caught tarpons. The results indicate that cage cultured tarpon in estuarine areas may be considered a viable activity mainly when carried out in small scale.
