The stabilization pond system is the most simple form of sewage treatment. The effluents of these ponds are rich in phytoplankton, zooplancton and particulate organic matter, which are food for fish. On the first phase of this research the environmental conditions for the fish culture was investigated. On the second phase, in the laboratory, the effect of
the fish introduction into the treated effluents was investigated. During six days the fingerlings of the tilápia (Oreochromis niloticus), bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis) and the silver carp (Hypophtalmichthys molitrix), were tested in tanks with 60 liters of effluent from the stabilization pond. In the laboratory experiment the tilapia fingerlings had reduced of 66.2% of suspended solids and 74.1% of the COD of initial effluent. The consumption of the suspended solids by the fish made the concentration of N-ammonia increase 21.6 times, making the relationship N:P better for development of Chlorophyta (green algae) than the Cyanophyta (blue-green algae), toxic to fish and birds. The introduction of fish is possible and beneficial for the treatment of effluents, and in the process improve the quality of the environment.
