The determination of the fish fecundity is essential for the knowledge of the biology of the species and for the correct quantitative evaluation of its stocks. A lot of information about fecundity exist for several fishes, but for Leporinus copellandii, no information was avaiable at this moment. The Leporinus copellandii is a herbivorous fish that lives
among the several species that inhabit the big rivers. Its absolute fecundity was determinated, and correlated with fish weight, gonads weight and condition factor. The amount of vitelogenic oocyte that will be eliminated by female, during the period of spawns, was considered as fecundity and varied of 6750 to 33833 oocytes with the average of 17343,40 7607,36 oocytes. Significant linear relation with fish weight (r 2 = 0,42 ; P 0,001 ; n = 25) and gonads weight (r 2 = 0,54 ; P 0,001 ; n = 25) were observed. However, the best relationship was with the weight of the gonads. For L.
copelandii, a significant correlation between absolute fecundity and condition factor was not observed. The amount of vitelogenic oocytes/g fish (42 0,26 oocytes) and amount of vitelogenic oocytes/ g ovary (1316 312 oocytes) was determinated.
