The objective of this chapter is to provide insights and highlight advances in understanding
cassava?s fundamental physiological traits ? essential to support the research of agronomists,
plant breeders, plant protection specialists and others dedicated to sustainably improving
cassava production, processing and use. The chapter explores in detail the growth and
development of the plant?s main structural components as well as the physiology and
control of carbon partitioning between source (leaves) and sink (roots) for optimizing yields
(e.g. maximizing financial returns, with sustainable practices). Cassava has several features
that make it especially well-adapted to climate change, especially related to increasing temperatures
and less predictable rainfall. Special attention is also given to providing
an understanding of the rapid post-harvest physiological deterioration (PPD) of cassava?s
roots, a feature that has profoundly influenced the ways that cassava is managed before
and after harvest. |
