Manipulation of the canopy directly affects the composition of the fruit. Depending on the rootstock used, the performance in the final quality of the grape also could be changed. Given this, the present study aims to evaluate the effect of shoot topping and rootstock on maturation of wine grapes grown at 900 m a.s.l. The experiment was conducted during the 2008 and 2009 seasons, with Cabernet Franc grafted on ?1103 Paulsen? and ?3309 Courdec? rootstock. The treatments consisted of four levels of shoot topping, with reducing of the leave area by 0, 15, 30 and 45%, performed at véraison. With the plants on ?3309 Courdec` we observed that a reduction of 24% of leave area increased the grapes anthocyanin and polyphenol content, but it was also noticed that soluble solids reduced with enhanced shoot topping in both seasons. For ?1103 Paulsen` a reduction of 28% of leave area increased the anthocyanin concentration, nevertheless, different behavior between seasons was observed for the polyphenol index and soluble solids of the grapes. The '3309 Courdec' rootstock induces plants with better maturation for the Cabernet Franc cultivar grown in this region of altitude. |
