Preclimateric ?Laetitia? Japanese plum (Prunus salicina) were treated the day after harvesting with 1-MCP at concentrations of 0, 0.01, 0.1 and 1 µL L -1 for 24 at 20°C. Following MCP treatment, fruit were held at 25°C for 15 days (shelf life) or stored at 0°C for 22, 32 or 44 days plus four days at 25°C. 1-MCP delayed softening and losses of total soluble solids (TSS) and titratable acidity (TA) during shelf life. Similarly, 1-MCP treatment improved maintenanceof fruit quality during storage at 0°C for up to 44 days plus four days ripening at 25°C. The increase of ehtylene production with prolonged storage was substantially delayed by 1-MCP. There was no additional benefit on delaying ethylene production and fruit ripening by using concentrations of 1-MCP higher than 0.1 µL L-1. The results show that ?Laetitia? plums treated with 1-MCP (0.1 µL L-1 for 24 h at 20°C) at harvest have the autocatalytic production of ethilene repressed and, therefore, delayed fruit ripening during shelf life and cold storage. |
