In regions of temperate climate, autumn is the most critical season for pasture production,
as summer forages are ending the cycle, with reduced productivity and quality, and
hibernals are not yet in full productive period. Among the strategies to ensure the
availability of forage in the autumn are the deferment of pastures and the use of fescue
(Festuca arundinaceae), which is a perennial grass and produces forage early in the
autumn, for not presenting a dormant mechanism in the summer. The objective was to
evaluate the forage production in cattle grazing systems in reserved natural pasture or
fescue. The experiment was conducted for two consecutive years. Two different areas
were used to compose the treatments: 1) Improved natural pasture (deferred for 60 days).
2) Fescue pasture cv. 312. Grazing occurred from April to June and the method adopted
was continuous. There were evaluated forage mass (FM) and forage accumulation (FA)
using exclosure cages, canopy height with the aid of sward stick and stocking rate (SR).
The experimental design was in randomized blocks with two replications of area per
treatment. The analyzes were performed considering the 5% level of significance with the
R software. In total, three grazing periods were performed, the canopy height differed
according to the grazing period and type of pasture (P<0.05). The initial average height
of the natural pasture was higher due to the deferral (27.8 cm in the first grazing and 9.9
cm in the third grazing). The fescue grazing height was lower than the reserved natural
pasture, in the first grazing period (19.4 cm), on average the height in the other periods
was 11.3 cm. The dry matter (DM) accumulation differed between the years of evaluation
(P<0.05), the natural pasture showed no growth, during the autumn, starting the grazing
with 4,726 kg of DM ha-1 and ending with 915.3 kg of DM ha-1. In the second year, the
initial FM was 2,054.0 kg of DM ha-1 and an FA of 1,567.3 kg of DM ha-1 between the first
and the second grazing, this difference is related to the climatic condition, because in the
second year of assessment the autumn registered a higher temperature and late frosts,
favoring plant growth. The fescue pasture, despite having forage growth in the three
grazing periods, showed lower FM compared to the reserved natural pasture (1,472.3
and 2,276.1 kg of DM ha-1), respectively. The lower FM can be explained by the higher
stocking rate (P<0.05) for fescue (3.92 animal unit ha-1) when compared to the native field
(2.00 animal unit ha-1). Forage planning is important to ensure adequate nutrition for
livestock throughout the year. During autumn practices as deferring pastures and
cultivating species such as fescue are viable alternatives for cattle mantence. MenosIn regions of temperate climate, autumn is the most critical season for pasture production,
