The Hibiscus cannabinus plant has been used in the treatment of inflammatory and anti-tumor processes. However, there are few studies that characterize its effects in vivo. Objective: Evaluate the preventive activity of H. cannabinus flower extract in rats induced to in vivo model of colon carcinogenesis and in vitro cytotoxicity. Material and Methods: Male Wistar rats were divided into three groups (n=6) Control (C), Standard diet (AIN-93M), Cancer (CA) and Cancer treated with H. cannabinus added in the standard diet (CAH). After two weeks the CA and CAH groups were submitted to colon carcinogenesis model with dimetylhydrazine. At the end of experiment the animals were sacrificed and the colon was removed and kept in a controlled environment to analize the presence of crypts. In addiction, the effect on fibroblast (L929) cell viability was determined by MTT assay. Results and Discussion: The CA groups and CAH exhibited a decrease in the food consumption average. However, just the CA group demonstrated lower body weight gain (166.67g x 208.50g) and liver weight (10.06g x 13.79g) when compared to group C. Interesting, the CAH group presented (p=0.05) fewer crypts (n=345) when compared to CA group (n=571). In addition, the H. cannabinus flower extract did not present cytotoxicity in L929 cell in all concentrations evaluated (1, 10 or 100 μg/mL). Conclusion: Together, the data herein obtained show that H. cannabinus flower extract presented preventive effect in the colon carcinoma by reducing the number of aberrant crypts and did not present cytotoxicity in L929 cell. Furthermore the extract was able to improve the animal nutritional status. MenosThe Hibiscus cannabinus plant has been used in the treatment of inflammatory and anti-tumor processes.
