Commercial growing of Japanese pears in Brazil is recent, being less than 15 years. The cultivated area is still very small and it is concentrated in the south, in the States, of Santa Catarina (biggest grower), Rio Grande do Sul, Sao Paulo and Parana. The main cultivars are Hosui, Kosui and Nijisseiki. The cv. Hosui bears big fruits (285g), poor flowering in regions with 500 to 700 h of winter temperatures < 7.2°C, but with good productivity (37 t/ha) and is the most planted. The cv. Kosui is well adapted in milder regions though at more than 400 h of chilling, and presents a very good blooming and fruit set, but the fruit are small (150 g) and the plants is highy susceptible to Dothiorella sp. The post common disease is caused by Entomosporium mespili. The cv. Nijisseiki produces well in the coldest areas of Brazil, with more than 700 h of chilling. The preference by the Brazilian consumer is for fruits of brown skin color. The most important pest is the fruit fly (Anastrepha fraterculus). The bagging of the fruits helps to to protect against fruit gly and it is a practice being adopted for Hosui as well. The price obtained by the growers are considered very good, varying from US$ 0.69/kg for small fruits and US$ 1.57/kg for bigger and selected fruits. The Japanese pear (Nashi) is still an unknown fruit by the big consumer public from Brazil and for that intense marketing is necessary.
